On Monday the 25th and Tuesday the 26th of November, V Swans held the First VSwans Cup Basketball Tournament, where students from Shooting Hoops classes were picked to go on an incentive trip to play netball and basketball in Hedland. We took away 17 students, making up a Year 7/8 Boys team, a Year 9/10 Boys team and a year 7-10 Girls
Team The students represented Newman SHS and competed against students from Roebourne DHS and Hedland SHS.

The students qualified for this trip by showing good behaviour in all classes, being up to date with assessments, and maintaining high uniform compliance in their Shooting Hoops classes.

All of our teams put in a great effort with 2 of them making it into the finals. Both the Year 9/10 Boys Team and the Girls Team also won their Finals, thus topping off what was a great carnival overall.

The Year 7/8 team showed great spirit but ran up against a very strong Hedland Team who took out the division. Given that a number of the boys had not played in a tournament before they performed very well.

Two of our players were named Best and Fairest for their division. Congratulations to Grace Yates-Woodhouse (Girls Year 7-10) and John Gozo (Year 9/10 Boys) on winning those awards.

Thank you to all the students that were involved, your behaviour on this trip was a credit to both Newman SHS and the Shooting Hoops Programs. It was a pleasure taking you on the first of what hopes to be many basketball carnivals in the future.

We would like to thank Mr Yarnold, Mr Atto, as well as our VSwans Trainee Lauren Taylor, for volunteering their time to help on the camp. Your efforts and input enhanced the experience for the students who went on the trip.

A big thankyou to Major Partner BHP for their ongoing support of Shooting Hoops Program, your support enables us to have incentive trips like this one
