On Tuesday the 13th of June, Newman SHS were very fortunate to have a visit from WCE star Nic Naitanui and WCE Schools & Community Coordinator James Grabski, as part of the Kicking Goals Program. The students in the Kicking Goals Classes got the chance to have a kick with Nic, as well as hear his insights into the life of an AFL footballer, and what it takes to reach that level.
Our Year 7 Kicking Goals students had Nic and James participate in their SEPEP Competition (which made it hard for some of the students going up in the ruck), while the year 8's had a kicking accuracy contest, where the class prevailed over Nic, hitting 4 targets to 2! The Year 9/10 class heard from Nic about the relationships between players and umpires, which links into their Umpiring course they are currently completing, then got the feeling of a WCE training session, with James and Nic as the coaches.
Nic and James also spent some time with our Cert II Sport and Recreation students, where Nic was interviewed as a potential client, who was undertaking a rehab program for a return to football.
After school, the Strength 2 Succeed students participated in a WCE warmup with Nic and James, with the focus on clean hands and good decision making, traits that the students will no doubt take into their football on the weekends. Nic also touched on the pathway from junior football to the AFL, and his journey.
We would like to thank Nic and James for coming up to Newman, the students got a lot out of the visit.
